Geocoding: a Necessary First Step

چکیده
the 1950s, are a common tool for transportation planning. While these surveys are designed for the purpose of developing input for the travel forecasting process, the resulting data often end up being used for a wide range of planning and research activities. Stopher and Metcalf ’s survey of 55 recent travel surveys found that most took the form of a travel diary.1 While these diaries ranged considerably in format, one common element was a request that the respondents list the addresses associated with each trip or activity. This particular element is important insofar as it allows each respondent’s travel pattern to be geographically located and tied to a spatial database. Travel is an inherently spatial activity; therefore, the ability to explore travel patterns within a spatial database allows for a more complete exploration of the travel-diary output. A geographic information system (GIS) is the software that organizes, manipulates and analyzes such spatial databases. This feature discusses the benefits of using a GIS to process and explore traveldiary data. The application of a GIS to travel-diary data is illustrated by means of an analysis of a travel diary conducted in three neighborhoods in the Seattle, Wash., USA, metropolitan area. This 1992 travel-diary survey, the purpose of which was to examine the relationship between transportation and land use, collected data on two consecutive days of travel for 900 households. At an average cost of $400,000, travel surveys are an important, but costly, source of data.1 The high cost of travel surveys has made GISs an increasingly popular means of deriving maximum benefit out of this type of investment.

An Approach for Automated Registration of Hyperspectral Images for Boresight Calibration
Parametric geocoding is a standard procedure for orthorectification of hyperspectral airborne scanner data. Boresight parameters are estimated by using the image coordinates of precisely known ground reference points. To fully automate the processing of the recorded hyperspectral data ground reference points should be selected and matched by an algorithm without user interaction. In this articl...
متن کاملAn evaluation framework for comparing geocoding systems
BACKGROUND Geocoding, the process of converting textual information describing a location into one or more digital geographic representations, is a routine task performed at large organizations and government agencies across the globe. In a health context, this task is often a fundamental first step performed prior to all operations that take place in a spatially-based health study. As such, th...
متن کاملGeocoding health data with Geographic Information Systems: a pilot study in northeast Italy for developing a standardized data-acquiring format
INTRODUCTION Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an innovative and somewhat crucial tool for analyzing relationships between public health data and environment. This study, though focusing on a Local Health Unit of northeastern Italy, could be taken as a benchmark for developing a standardized national data-acquiring format, providing a step-by-step instructions on the manipulation...
متن کاملA Study on Integrated SAR Processing and Geocoding by Means of Time-Domain Backprojection
Geocoded products of synthetic aperture radar data are of great interest for many applications. The conventional processing chain, which leads to geographically referenced synthetic aperture data consists of two main steps: first, the raw data are focused and, in a second step, the resulting single look complex image is geocoded to the favoured coordinate system. We investigate a time-domain ba...
متن کاملImproved Airborne SAR Data Processing by Blockwise Focusing, Mosaicking and Geocoding
Standard focusing of SAR data assumes a straight recording track of the sensor platform. Small non-linearities of airborne platform are corrected for during a motion compensation step while keeping the assumption of a stripmap geometry. In the case of high resolution and high frequency SAR systems, the navigation data may not be accurate enough to perform such a motion compensation; SAR systems...
